OUSA lobbying for better experiences for survivors

As of this morning, OUSA has agreed to begin lobbying the Government, the University of Otago, NZUSA, and all student associations, to establish an independent body to monitor and report on the responses of all tertiary institutions on issues of sexual violence against staff and students.

Thursdays in Black Otago are thrilled that OUSA are willing to step up and look forward to helping them make this happen. When the exec voted in favour of the motion, club Secretary Kayli Taylor said this is “a hill [Thursdays in Black] are willing to die on.”

One of the biggest issues facing sexual violence prevention and activism is that when it comes to sexual violence within institutions, it is not exactly in the best interests of institutions to have the statistics of sexual violence known or publicised. A standardised independent body ensures best practice in policy, management and reporting procedures - ultimately, to ensure the best experiences for survivors.
